The Vanguards of Cleveland offer the following products and services:
- Free Smoke Detectors
-
Through our Operation:Bright Future! program
we offer smoke detectors to City of Cleveland residents at no charge along
with installation if required. Our detectors have 10 year lithium ion
batteries that do not need to be changed for 10 years. This is an added
benefit over the standard model detectors that need their batteries replaced
every six months that are provided to citizens by other community programs.
To our knowledge we are the only organization in the Northeast Ohio region
to provide these high end detectors to individuals at no charge and we are
happy to provide this service for our city residents.

- High School Student Vocational Career
Training
-
Through a collaboration with the Cleveland
Metropolitan School District (CMSD) and Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C)
we have developed the Martin Luther King, Jr. Public Safety Academy in which
is housed the MLK Firefighter Training Program. This is a four year
vocational training program for high school students that affords them the
opportunity to become certified by the State of Ohio as Professional
Firefighters upon graduation from high school and successful completion of
the program requirements. The program is housed in the Martin Luther King,
Jr. School for Law & Municipal Careers in the Hough neighborhood of
Cleveland, Ohio. The program is open to any current CMSD student. Students
can apply for entry into the program through their guidance counselors or
directly by contacting us by email or phone. The program has been in
operation for five years and it's participants have the distinction of
having a 100% high school graduation rate to this point. Approximately 80%
of the graduates from our program go on to attend college. To date we have
placed many of our graduates in part-time employment with various suburban
fire departments and one graduate has attained full time employment as a
career firefighter with a suburban department. We strive to create and
maintain a career path into the fire service for the youth of our community
so that city residents can benefit from city jobs whose salaries are
sustained by their tax payments.
- Fire Safety Education
-
We provide fire safety educational instructors for
area schools, community events and the elderly. Many of our members are
certified by the State of Ohio as fire instructors with over a decade of
firefighting experience. We also have a mobile classroom that we can bring
to your site or event upon request. Topics of instruction include fire
safety, CPR, AED usage, first aid, home fire safety and residential fire
escape planning. Contact us to learn how we can assist you with your needs.
